How to Deal with the TOUGH Customers in your Cake Business

How did this customer slip through the crack? 

WHY oh WHY did this customer come to me? 

Ever have this HORRIBLE or somewhat unpleasant experience with a customer that made you want to hide in a corner and cry your eyes out? 

Oh yea, I had one in April, and I’ve had many before then. 

In fact one time, I had a cake client where it felt me DEVASTATED!! 

I was bawling my eyes out at my mom's house and temporarily shut my business down.....but I was just playing!

Anywho, a loyal customer ordered an anniversary cake and as I was working on the cake order, I knew something was off. 

I should NOT have booked this cake order. 

But, I put my big girl pants on and completed it. 

After I delivered the cake, the client didn’t really like the cake. 

And a week after the event, she called me to tell me she was highly disappointed with the cake I made for her. *sad panda over here* 

I got really upset because I truly felt I gave that cake my all and I liked the finished product. 

But, at the end of the day, I had an unhappy customer. 

So how do you deal with the TOUGH Customers? 

1. Be grateful you attracted this customer. 

If you aren’t having tough customers, you aren’t growing. 

When I’ve had tough customers, I’ve actually became a better business owner and designer. These situations helped me to uncover the hidden “holes” inside of my business and place some much needed boundaries. 

They helped me to uncover exactly what I needed to put in place to not have that situation to happen again, place them inside my contract (if you don’t have one, you can grab one here), and how to strengthen my boundaries. 

2. Don’t take it so personally.

As designers, we can take a lot of things personally because we designed the cake the cakes. 

It’s an expression of our creativity. 

However, customers may not view our cakes the same way, they see it as a product. 

Take a neutral approach to the cake you provided or whatever happened inside your cake business and view from there. 

That way, less emotions are involved and you can make a clear decision on how to handle the customer instead of making a decision based on your emotions.

3. Handle the customer by doing right by you AND the customer. 

Is the customer always right? hmmm not usually. But, how they feel is legitimate and real. However you are a small business owner. 

Have some company policies in place for when these sticky situations happen so you know how to handle them going forward. 

This helps you stay consistent and takes the guess work out of how to handle these tough customers.  

Each one needs to be mastered in order to see the results you really want inside your cake business.

How to Rebrand to a High-End Cake Business

 
 

Take a look at your cake brand.

Do you love it?

Think it’s meh…okay?

Does your logo/name probably resemble the 10+ other cake businesses that have similar branding?? 

Your brand is everything and can dictate the kind of customers that come into your business. 

I’m on my 3rd baking company.

Before I launched Aspen Charm Cakes, I wanted to have the right branding to attract a certain client. 

But, I’ve gone through some rebranding to really attract a certain clientele and distract other clients I didn’t want to do business with. 

Here are some key areas for what and how you should rebrand your cake business. 
 

1.  YOUR WEBSITE

Your website is EVERYTHING. The image of your cake business is all in your website and customers can tell a lot about you, your prices, and your cake business alone just from your website.

If you were a client who was willing to pay $8 - 12 CONSISTENTLY, would she be attracted to your website?

Take an honest look at your website and take a look at it from the customer’s point of view.

2. YOUR CAKES/YOUR WORK.

Your work truly attracts WHO you want to work with, and I’ve found that when your portfolio has a certain “look” you are attracting clients who want to experience your cakes at their event. 

When I took a honest look at my cakes, I immediately got busy becoming a better designer because my cakes looked like cakes budget clients would buy. 

This is also why I studied with Maggie Austin this past April because I was very honest with myself, I needed to become better as a designer who consistently charges $1200+ for cakes....my skills were kinda slipping!

Take a hard look at your work and ask yourself, “Would a client who wants to pay $8 - 12 per slice want these cakes? Do my cakes scream expensive?” If not, go back to the drawing board and PRACTICE.

3. YOUR MISCELLANEOUS MARKETING ITEMS

Business cards, logos, marketing hand-outs, pamphlets, banners, Info Guides, menus……all of these miscellaneous marketing marketing materials all add up to the type of cake brand you truly are! 

Wait, do you even have these items in your cake business ??

If your marketing materials look cheap or your business cards are on cheap card-stock….what does that say about your brand and the business you want to attract? 

The smallest details add up to the biggest results. 

When you pay attention to detail, people notice. Don’t turn a blind eye to this, make it all count!
